The male portrait presented on this issue is undoubtly inspired by the contemporary royal portrait of the Syracusan King Hieronymus, the grandson of the famous king Hieron II. Unlike his grandfather and father, who were loyal allies of the Romans, he sided with the Carthaginians. Although his reign lasted only for thirteen months, a substantial coinage was produced on his behalf. Chief among them was the silver 10-litrae, which bore a portrait similar to the one on this Carthaginian piece. The reverse with the two shields upon the decorated beak of the galley speaks exclusively to the military strength of the Carthaginians.
